India: Vicarious Pleasure In The Pain Of Others
For 14 years to date I have used vigorously the Delhi Metro. So much so, that most people i know pass snide remarks, that to meet me they will have to change their residence to a place near the DMRC stations. That well might be so, and I feel no shame about it. I did the same in Hong Kong and New York, where people are far more involved in their lives to be bothered about how you travel. Not so, in Delhi.
A 3rd World, 3rd Class City slitting at the seams has the largest collection of the biggest, jingoist, ultra-bourgeois population which finds every reason to demean the other.
Politicians that live in luxury, move in ultra super million dollar bullet proof cars, 4000 men three tiered security, liveried staff at their beck and call, and the n-button close to their butter fingers can sit, pass sermons and decide the future of others.
Post Mrs G, the son and scion passed uncharitable comments of a Banyan Tree taking down a lot as it fell, VP Singh made the stunning, öur coffers are empty" speech, the last PM carried repeated currency devaluations even as I appeared for a job at Apollo Tyres in 1991 and then pledged India's Gold-which still remain within the vaults of BOE in London. The latest champ of the masses is another variety-but apart very little.
On the Metro I hear stories of people who stashed Bonuses at home, I hear of people who sold land in cash and kept the money at home, those who carried sale proceeds of Paddy home, those who are paid wages only in cash, my rickshawallah-who cannot Buy Salt because the local baniya wont sell at list price, the housewife and friends with impending marriages of daughters, my old demised father and mother who silently kept some spare money at home just in case someone falls ill at night or even dies. Yes, I belong to this same class of people who faces these problems daily.
I am not a CM for whom the State pays ICU bills for 60 days and the invalid still remains in power, I am not a leader who cries at everything. And fails to realise that the bungling and failure is of the Bureaucracy and the politicians who refuse to accept. We wait, we suffer-till some one with a better promise comes on, Sells new dreams and then destroys them all.
